In this Glacier Travel Course you will learn how to safely travel in glaciated terrain and how to perform crevasse rescue using standard basic systems. This is an introductory course, you don’t need any previous experience with glacier travel. However, knowing the basic climbing knots is an asset and will help you focus on learning all the other skills involved with crevasse rescue

But lacking the experience and relying on your friends to bring the knowledge and the gear needed to travel on a glacier? Want to gain confidence in your rope skills and learn the skills to rescue someone who have fallen into a crevasse?

What You Will Learn

Our glacier travel and crevasse rescue course is an introduction to travel in glaciated terrain and will teach you the BASIC skills necessary to travel on a glacier in winter time. We will spend our first day practising rope rescue skills, and learn how to rescue someone who has fallen into a crevasse and the necessary tools required. Our second day will be spent covering appropriate travel techniques on a glacier and assessing crevasse hazard., roped versus unroped travel and how and when to apply it.

DIFFICULTY: Advanced ski ability with basic to advanced backcountry experience. No glacier experience or rope skills required.

Itinerary

PRE-COURSE Zoom meeting 1-2 hrs the evening before the course. We will talk about glacier fundamentals, how they are formed and the gear necessary for travelling safely on glacier.

DAY 1: 8.00 am - 4.00 pm, Revelstoke

We will spend the day at an outdoor location in Revelstoke learning the ropes. A lot of information will be covered this day and will be fully hands on. You will learn basic crevasse rescue systems, and potentially more advanced systems if times allow.

DAY 2: 8.00 am - 4.00 pm, Rogers Pass

We will meet at ski location 8am for a full day of travel. This day will be focused on travelling techniques on a glacier, how to recognize crevassed areas, when to use ropes when travelling on the glacier and how to rope up.
