Our Story

Stenberg Guides is a guiding service focused on mountain related adventures offering an array of backcountry ski touring and hiking programs to far and remote places in the world.

With a lust for adventure, we are dedicated to offering our clients a safe and authentic wilderness experience.From our base in Revelstoke, BC, we are able to provide an amazing, world-class backcountry experience right here, in our own backyard. Other trip itineraries reach beyond our immediate vicinity to explore wild places such as Iceland, Norway and even far reaching polar regions, such as Antarctica, Svalbard and Greenland.

The founder of Stenberg Guides is Emelie Stenberg. Emelie is a skier at heart and has followed her passion into the mountains all around the world.She has skied and worked extensively in the Canadian Rockies, the Columbia and Coast Mountains of British Columbia, the European Alps, the Caucasus in Russia, the Pamir Mountains in Central Asia, the high arctic of Iceland, Svalbard and beyond. She was born and raised in Sweden and came to Canada in 2004 to experience BC powder skiing, and was immediately hooked.

After graduating from Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, BC, with an Adventure Guide Diploma and a Bachelor of Tourist Management, she moved to Revelstoke to pursue a career as a guide. Since then, she has completed the ACMG Ski and Hiking Guide certification and now devotes her time to guiding worldwide year-round.

Adventure and exploration has been a big part of her life and she continues to dream and be inspired by what the more remote parts of the world have to offer. When she’s not working with Stenberg Guides or exploring wild places she can be found working as a heliski guide for Canadian Mountain Holidays, travelling back to Sweden to stay connected with her roots, or mountain biking and rock climbing in the mountain playground she calls home.

We place a huge emphasis on building strong mountain partnerships based on mutual trust, and we begin by working to understand your personal goals and motivations for joining one of our trips. We strive to facilitate positive and effective experiential learning through human powered backcountry travel.

Commitment to Safety

From start to finish, safety is our top priority. We are committed to guest safety at all times. All of our guides are certified through the ACMG (Association of Canadian Mountain Guides) or IFMGA (International Federation of Mountain Guides Association). Only after a comprehensive training and examination process that fulfills the highest international standard can a guide receive these certifications, and we only use highly experienced and certified guides.

Small Groups

At Stenberg Guides, we value small groups because they allow us to create a more personalized experience, making it possible to cater to YOUR specific needs. One of the most common reasons we see for booking a backcountry trip is to escape the crowds and find some peace and quiet in the mountains. Small groups create this sort of intimate experience. What’s more, our trips and courses offer plenty of personalized attention from guides and instructors, which makes for better learning and a higher quality experience overall.

Our typical guide to guest ratio ranges from 4:1 to 6:1 (see our specific programs for group sizes). Group sizes will never exceed 8 people.

We will work with you to plan your ideal expedition, coordinate logistics and make the dream a reality.

Instructional components

At Stenberg Guides, we believe in building a strong foundation based on technical skills, weather it’s working on powder turns, pushing the limits of your comfort zone, learning essential rope skills for glacier travel, terrain assessment, or brushing up on avalanche and crevasse rescue techniques. No matter the focus, coaching and instruction is a big part of any trip. Many of our programs also offer a daily yoga practice to bring attention to nourishing your body and mind. Stenberg Guides brings people together to experience the essence of mountain life by creating an environment in which our guests can learn, thrive and be inspired.
